The Houston Hawks started the 2022-2023 season just how they ended their last campaign, by winning a tournament,

The defending Division II state championships won the Peninsula Ice Challenge over the weekend in Soldotna.

The Hawks outscored opponents 23-5 en route to wins over Soldotna, Kenai and Tri-Valley. Houston capped its weekend with a 10-0 win over Tri-Valley. Brayden Spain netted a hat trick to lead the Hawks. Daniel Matveev and Andrey Reutov scored two goals each. Brody Richard and Domnin Efimov also scored.

That followed an 8-1 win over Kenai. Matveev, Reutov and Trebnton Huber scored two goals each. Spain and Anfim Konev also scored. Afanasy Efimov led the Hawks with three assists.

Ari Burnside made 16 saves in the win. Houston outshot the Kardinals 50-17.

Houston opened the tourney with a 5-4 win over Soldotna. Huber scored the game-winner with 2:57 left in regulation. Huber and Matveev scored two goals each. Domnin Efmov also scored. Burnside made 25 saves. The Hawks outshot SoHi 41-29.

In other action Dimond edged Wasilla 2-1 at the Brett Memorial Ice Arena. Sterling Myers scored the lone Wasilla goal. Dalan Dubie had an assist.

Kole Kite made 25 saves for the Warriors.
