Herb Naumann left this world after a sudden illness befell him while he was visiting in Tucson, Ariz.
Born to Dorothy (Hunter) and Herbert W. Naumann in Philadelphia, Mr. Naumann spent his early years there, where he learned to love the outdoors, hunting and fishing.
After his discharge from the Air Force, he moved to Colorado, where he settled first in Boulder and then in Grand Junction, where he and his former wife, Karen Boita, operated Western Colorado Expeditions. They relocated to Homer in 1976 and were later divorced. Mr. Naumann resided in Alaska until 2004.
His loved ones wrote, "He was a true mountain man who always strove for new adventure. Montana was to be his next destination. Herb was a man possessed of a large personality and many talents, and he lived life on his own terms. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him and called him friend. Among those are Jane and Greg Ogzkrus of Anchorage, Carol and Jack McClellan, Jim Carson, Julie, Coree and Scotty Bean and Kirk and "T.J." Heider of Wasilla, his adopted mother, Irene Pettigrew, and husband, Jim Ostrer, and Karen Boita, of Grand View Junction."
He is survived by his loving sisters, Kathy Naumann, Lenore Gates and Betty Naumann, along with her children, Patrick, Lee, and Elizabeth; an uncle, Bob Hunter, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy; father, Herb, and stepfather, Chester.
A celebration of life will be held at the VFW Post 9365 at 5 p.m. Feb. 5. Cremation has taken place and his ashes will be scattered in the mountains in the spring.
