It was a busy weekend for the Houston Fire Department, responding to calls in frigid temperatures, with reports of temperature range of -15F during the day, to a bone-chilling -30F in the evening hours.
According to HFD Chief Christian Hartley, following a day responding to calls on January 3, the department was once again called out just after 10 p.m. to respond to a single-family unit that was heavily involved.
According to an online post, the structure and its contents were a complete loss, while the sole occupant was transported with non-life-threatening injuries. One firefighter was also assessed by EMS on-scene.
In addition to the HFD, units from the West Lakes Fire Department, Willow Caswell Fire Department, and Central Mat-Su Fire Department were all on-scene to put out the blaze in -30F temperatures.
Hartley also thanked the Alaska State Troopers (AST), who were the initial responders, providing critical information to better equip the firefighters before they attacked the fire. AST also gave first aid to the resident after they escaped the fire through a window.
“I really am thankful to (the) troopers for their rapid response and getting the victim out of the cold and providing first aid. It was -30F last night, and at that temperatures, cold injuries happen fast,” said Hartley.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation with the Alaska State Fire Marshal’s Office.
