High winds prompt air quality warning

MAT-SU — The Mat-Su Borough issued an air quality advisory Thursday afternoon for Palmer and surrounding areas, until winds abate.

The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning for the Matanuska Valley through midnight, Friday, with a forecast for northeast winds gusting from 60 to 75 mph.

“Due to the strong winds and dry conditions, the air quality in Palmer and surrounding areas may be unhealthy to hazardous,” a borough press release reads.

Children, the elderly and persons with heart or lung disease are advised to stay indoors and reduce physical activity. Everyone is encouraged to avoid vigorous outdoor activity.
