High winds prompt burn ban, air quality warning

PALMER — The state’s Division of Forestry has issued a burn ban for the Mat-Su Valley.

The ban was put into effect at 9 a.m. and will continue “until further notice.” It covers burn barrels and all open burning other than camping or cooking fires.

According to Forestry, dry weather and strong winds have prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag Warning that, in turn, prompted the burn ban.

Meanwhile, an air quality warning in Mat-Su led to the cancellation of a junior high school track meet at Colony High School.
