Due to a lack of media coverage, many Alaskans have not heard that our state will soon honor Purple Heart recipients by designating parts of the Alaska and Richardson highways a Purple Heart Trail (to be clear, this designation will not change the official names of these highways). A Purple Heart medal is awarded to members of the armed services wounded by enemy action.
When our constituent Ron Siebels brought us this proposal to honor the sacrifice of these veterans, we were happy to sponsor the necessary legislation.
On May 3, the governor signed the bill and the Department of Transportation is preparing the signage for the Purple Heart Trail.
We also want to announce $250,000 of the request from Mayor Mark Begich to improve the Veterans’ Memorial on the Anchorage Park Strip was included in the state budget. We hope folks will agree this will be money well spent.
