Historic season ends for Hawks

FAIRBANKS — The Houston Hawks will remember the 2010-11 hockey season as historic. For the first time since joining the 4A Mid-Alaska Conference, Houston earned a berth in the MAC tournament. But on Friday, the Hawks’ season came to an end.

Lathrop used a 7-0 win over Houston to move into the MAC title game and knock the Hawks out of the single-elimination championships. Colton Wolter scored a pair of goals for Lathrop, which also earned a state tournament berth with the win. Goalie Brandon Brown stopped all 22 Houston shots.

The contest was also the final game for five Houston seniors: captain Rye Humphreys, forward Jon Olson, forward Kevin Niemi, defenseman Zack Weisz and goaltender Ben Barenburg.
