PALMER - The inaugural Dale Stetler Memorial Hogs & Horses 3-D Barrel Race will get started tonight at 7:30 at the Four Corners rodeo grounds in Wasilla.
The unusual competition has horseback riders and motorcycle riders completing the barrel race course that is familiar to rodeo fans.
The hogs (a term of endearment for Harley-Davidson motorcycles) and the horse will not be going at the same time. All brands and models of motorcycles can be entered, not just the traditional hogs.
Stetler was killed last February in an on-the-job explosion in Anchorage. He was an avid motorcycle rider. His widow, Carrie Stetler, is an avid horseback barrel racer.
A flyer from Carrie Stetler and the other organizers said Dale Stetler had often talked about a barrel-racing competition involving motorcycles and horses. This year, it was arranged with the help of the Alaska chapter of the National Barrel Horse Association.
There is a $25 entry fee, and top finishers (three for horses and three for cycles) get belt buckles. There is a rule against participants consuming any alcohol before the race.
For information, contact Carrie Stetler at 746-4962.
NHLs revered Stanley Cup will be on display at Anchorage park
ANCHORAGE - The Stanley Cup, which is claimed each season by the team that wins the National Hockey League playoffs, will be on display today in Anchorage.
The cup will be on display starting at 1 p.m. at Delaney Strip Park. People can walk by the cup, take advantage of photo opportunities and eventually see the Stanley Cup hoisted into the air by an Anchorage Fire Department ladder truck.
The cup is in Anchorage thanks to Scott Gomez, who grew up in Anchorage and played for the New Jersey Devils, who beat the Dallas Stars to win the cup last month.
It is a tradition that each player on the winning team gets to have the cup for a day. Gomez will make a short speech at about 5 p.m. at the park.
The cup is expected at the Delaney Strip Park at 1 p.m., arriving with Gomez on a dog sled.
At 1:10, there will be a formal presentation, followed by entertainment from master of ceremonies Sourdough Mike. He will sing the Alaska Flag Song.
At 1:20, the mayor and some East High School coaches will talk. (Gomez graduated from East.)
From 1:35 until 5, there will be photo opportunities with the Stanley Cup, in the wording of the event organizers.
The day ends with the fire truck hoisting the cup over Anchorage at 6:45.
