Home Builders celebrate at annual meeting

WASILLA -- The Mat-Su Home Builders Association had its annual meeting and awards banquet at Evangelo's Restaurant Oct. 16. The banquet hall was packed, the association's immediate past president Ron Burkhardsmeier said the dinner was the "largest ever" as a roomful of builders, realtors and associates celebrated the year's highlights.

"We keep striving to move forward, we keep striving as an organization," Burkhardsmeier said.

The association held elections for the 2004 board of directors, and also presented the winners of the 2003 Fall Showcase of Homes. A new award was also presented; the Golden Hammer Award honors a veteran builder, this year's winner was Ron Clements.

"I just don't know what to say," Clements said. "This is totally unexpected."

Eleven board members were elected to the 2004 board: Scott Pattison, president; Dave Owens, president elect; Ron Burkhardsmeier, immediate past president; Carmen Branch, secretary; Dennis Purviance, treasurer; Colleen Huston, Tom Smith, Sheirwin Caldwell, Dana Frey, Tracy Antonovich and Ben Kainer.

The 2003 Fall Showcase awards had seven price categories and one subdivision category, each home was scored by a panel of peers; the panel judged four categories in each price range: best curb appeal, best kitchen, best layout, best master suite and bathroom. Each price category also had an overall winner, who received the Golden Spike Award. Golden Spike winners were:

Price category $205,000 to $217,500: Jess Hall, Hall Quality Homes

Price category $314,000 to $340,000: Randy Reich, Homes by Randall

Price category $425,000 to $437,500: Mike Thompson, WM Construction

Troy Davis Homes took home the subdivision award for Church Ridge Estates.
