PALMER — Last week in preparation for their homecoming game against Palmer, the Colony Knights busted out some of the best spirit the high school has ever seen.

As they joined together in outrageous outfits on Monday and Carhartts and white shirts on Friday, they made their increase in spirit incredibly more evident.

Throughout the year, the school has been extremely involved in activities and their support for those activities.

“Friday, as I looked at all the students in our gym I thought, ‘There is a lot of white out there, that is awesome,’” said Dawn Brettrager, a Colony High health teacher. “There is an overall sense of spirit and pride that is different this year; more kids are participating and are enthusiastic about their spirit.”

There was no denying the enthusiasm the Knights shared as the gym roared in support of all their sports team.

One element that could have contributed was the well-organized entertainment for the assembly. While not only presenting homecoming royalty and each fall sport, the leadership class that put on the assembly had each team and grade level compete in contests from cheering the loudest to bobbing for Mr. Potato Head parts and racing to put them together.

Another great moment at their assembly was first-year Colony varsity head football coach Brian McIntosh, who had just been cleared of cancer earlier that week, led the pep rally portion of the event. As he asked the school to cheer, they rose and united as one group of Super Fans. As they listened and predicted the outcome of the big game, the coach asked for nothing but positivity in the bleachers.

“We will not respond to any negativity,” McIntosh said.

As the day continued, the gymnasium full of students turned into a sea of fully painted, whiteout, Super Fans who supported their team completely.

For many students, this year seems to be exceptionally more spirited.

“My friends and I were talking about how much more spirit the school has this year compared to the previous three,” senior Josh Doan said. “Our assembly was awesome and our games are huge.”

In fact, it seems the Kinghts have brought out many more fans this year with five wins and two loses, than they did last year when they were undefeated.

“I’m extremely proud of CHS this year. Students have really stepped up and shown some school pride, the turnout for Super Fans is near double the amount last year, and that’s even for away games,” said senior Chelsea Halstead. “Kids have also shown enthusiasm for spirit days — on the Colony Super Fan day, the school was a sea of green.”

As for the football team, they have seen themselves become closer and more spirited as a team due to the many adversities they have had to face together.

No matter what the event — a volleyball game, swim meet, or football game— it is clear the shared spirit the school possesses this year.

“Everyone seems excited to be a Knight this year,” Halstead said.

Judging by the whiteout and cheering from Friday’s game and assembly, win or lose, Colony High School is proud to be the home of the Knights.
