Hometown Heroes, A look at local athletes competing at the next level

By the end of her high school career, Chandice Cronk's name was synonymous with Wasilla High School girls' basketball. While she isn't quite the center of the Santa Clara University universe, people at the Division I level are starting to remember the name Cronk.

In just her first season at the collegiate level, Cronk has started nine of her team's 13 games and is averaging 19 minutes per game - third-best on the Division I squad.

"Chandice is a great stand still shooter but she also does a great job of shooting off the dribble," Bronco head coach Michelle Bento-Jackson states in Cronk's bio on the Santa Clara University athletic department website. "She has a scorer's mentality and we have a lot of confidence in her abilities."

Cronk's ability to shoot the ball ultimately led her into the Bronco lineup, and the Wasilla 2004 graduate is steadily making an impact for Santa Clara. On Dec. 30, Cronk was named player of the game by Santa Clara radio after scoring 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting in a 78-62 win over Portland State. Cronk hit each of her three three-point attempts.

Cronk is currently averaging just under six points per game and has lifted her three-point shooting percentage to 36-percent. Cronk began the season shooting under 20 percent from the arc. The young Santa Clara squad, a team with just four upperclassman is 6-8.

On Jan. 7, the Broncos had a three-game winning streak snapped. Santa Clara fell to Gonzaga 85-50 in its West Coast Conference opener. Cronk was held to three points.
