Werner said someone from the group saw a Frontiersman article about the dogs when they were surrendered to Mat-Su Borough Animal Care and Regulation officers by their Meadow Lakes owners late last month. The group agreed to take the dogs and Werner agreed to transport them to Anchorage.
The first batch of five dogs was rescued from the shelter Tuesday, and the last batch of four was being taken Wednesday. Through discounts and donations, the dogs were housed and bathed at Golden Days Grooming in Anchorage, then flown to Fairbanks on a plane operated by Frontier Flying Service. Werner said the dogs will be given a hip X-ray and spay/neuter operations in Fairbanks and foster families will train and house the dogs while permanent homes are found.
