Hoops roundup: Moose win at home; Hawks, Huskies score road victories

The Palmer Moose used nine three-pointers to open the annual Palmer Elks Showdown with a victory. Palmer notched a 63-52 win over Valdez Thursday evening at Palmer High.

Shea Halbert hit four threes in the win, and scored a team-high 14 points. Carson Helm drained a pair of shots from beyond the arc and added 10. Lavar Marshall also scored in double-digits, finishing with 12.

The Palmer girls suffered a 46-40 loss to Valdez Thursday. Catherine Uschmann led Palmer with 12 points.

Houston boys, girls win on the road

The Houston Hawks opened the Rus Hitchcock Tip Off Tournament with a win over the host, the Nikiski Bulldogs. Kyle McLaughlin used a double-double to lead Houston to a 56-46 boys’ basketball win over Nikiski Thursday night. McLaughlin finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds. He was also one of four Hawks to hit double digits in scoring. Braden Cork and Cody Wyrick added a dozen each and Hayden Howard chipped in 10. The West Anchorage JV beat Houston 64-59 Friday. McLaughlin and Cork led Houston with 16 each. Cole Taylor scored 12.

The Houston girls opened the tourney with a 56-14 win over the Dimond JV. Lacy Graham finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawks. Katie Richey added 10 points. Host Nikiski beat the Houston girls 41-29 Friday. Emily Bitler had nine points and 10 rebounds for the Hawks.

Huskies shine in Delta

The Redington girls scored a 67-30 win over host Delta during the first day of the Dean Cummings Classic. Abbie Fuller led the Huskies with 16 points. Lexi Seymore added 15, and Destiny Simmons chipped in nine.

Nome edged Redington 47-46 Friday. Fuller finished with 21 points. Seymore scored 15.

In boys’ action, North Pole beat Redington 59-47 Thursday at the Delta tourney. Tony Rogers led the Huskies with nine. Wayde Bowman and Ruben Bond added eight each.
