The April snowfall in Meadow Lakes last week was supposed to be a fleeting farewell to winter, but for many local veterans, the darkness had already felt longer and heavier than usual. Then, a new light appeared
"Today was more than a grand opening," said Jessy Lakin of Hope Valley Health and Wellness, standing before a small crowd of veterans, local leaders, and community members. "It was a statement."
That statement was simple: No one fights alone here.
While the Hope Valley Health and Wellness center will officially open on April 20, the ribbon-cutting marked a significant milestone for the facility. The center is specifically designed to address a critical need for in-state care for Alaska’s veterans, focusing on treating the "invisible wounds" of service, including substance use, PTSD, and moral injury.
Situated on two private, rural acres in the heart of the Mat-Su, the facility was designed to be a sharp contrast to the chaotic, often isolating experience of trauma. Currently, the campus features four residential houses, two for men and two for women, designed to be intimate and supportive, with no more than five or six residents per house. The staff, Lakin says, are either connected to a veteran or served themselves. “We’re excited. We’ve got the staff, we’ve got the people, we’ve got the heart.”
Construction has already begun to add four more houses as part of the next phase, and there are plans for additional expansion as the program grows.
"The goal is to keep our Alaska veterans in-state," Lakin explained. “We start with detox, move into residential treatment, and then connect them into long-term sober living. We want to fix that underlying trauma so they can truly release".
As community members toured the brand-new residential facility, the unique, holistic approach was immediately apparent. Hope Valley isn't just about clinical appointments; it is a retreat for recovery.
The program's continuum of care includes:
--Detox and Residential Treatment: Initial stabilization and focused recovery programs.
--Holistic Therapies: Access to music, massage, and Reiki therapy to help residents relax and "truly release".
--Workforce Development: A robust alumni program and local partnerships to help veterans return to the community with purpose and career support.
Hope Valley will also offer in-depth treatment modalities including music therapy, massage, cold plunge therapy, and even Reiki to help veterans relax, reset, and rebuild their lives.
As the ribbon was cut, the atmosphere was a mix of quiet reflection and profound relief. The center, which is dual-certified by the Alaska Department of Behavioral Health and accredited by CARF International, represents a dedicated, specialized lifeline designed for those who have spent their careers serving others.
For Lakin, head of the Alaska Veteran Partnership, opening Hope Valley wasn't just a professional milestone—it was personal. Inspired by a family member’s struggle, Lakin was spurred to advocate for a "higher standard" of care for his fellow service members. He partnered with New Dawn Treatment Centers to bring Alaska its first dedicated veteran-only substance abuse facility.
Mat-Su Borough Mayor Edna DeVries joined the opening, marveling at how quickly the project moved from a proposal 18 months ago to a reality, calling it an "unbelievable" and essential addition to the community. "It’s sad, but it’s so needed," she noted.
By treating veterans in-state, Hope Valley ensures they aren't sent to "out of culture" facilities where they might be forgotten. Instead, they get the specialized, local care they deserve to solve the problems they face behind the scenes.
As the sun began to dip behind the surrounding trees, casting long shadows across the peaceful property, it was clear that a new day had dawned in the Mat-Su. In the darkest nights, the Valley had shown them the light—there was, finally, hope in the Valley.
