The State House passed House Joint Resolution 19, or HJR 19, on Wednesday, March 6, supporting the completion of the Port MacKenzie Rail Extension as well as the Northern Rail Extension in Interior Alaska.
Completion of the Port MacKenzie Rail Extension by the Matanuska-Susitna Borough and the Alaska Railroad would assist in the reduction of energy and transportation costs, help improve air quality, and enable a swifter movement of goods from our shores into the Interior of Alaska. Both projects have already had significant time and resources invested into them.
Completion of the Northern Rail Extension would help unlock the full potential of rail transportation in Alaska. It also sets a solid foundation for further expansion and connectivity of the state’s rail system. Full completion of the project would entail 89 new miles of track connecting North Pole to Delta Junction, enhancing military access to training at the Joint Pacific Alaska Range Complex, the Fort Greely missile defense facilities and future commercial opportunities in the Interior including agriculture.
“House Joint Resolution 19 (HJR 19) is a meaningful legislative step aimed at bolstering Alaska's infrastructure, defense capabilities, and economic prosperity through the completion of strategic rail extensions,” the House Majority, led by Republicans, said in a statement.
Rep. Kevin McCabe (R-Big Lake), who chairs the House Transportation Chair, said, “House Joint Resolution 19 underscores our commitment to fostering economic development, enhancing defense readiness, and promoting community engagement in critical infrastructure projects.
“These efforts are essential for Alaska's long-term prosperity and security,” McCabe said.
