HOUSTON — Another trip to Nikiski High School, another trophy for the Houston boys basketball program.
The Hawks won the Nikiski-Tip Off for the fourth straight year with a 53-46 win over the host Bulldogs Saturday at Nikiski High.
Matt Barron, who was named most valuable player of the tourney, scored a team-high 12 points for the Hawks. Lane Taylor added 11, while Jace Taylor and Charlie Buzby chipped in eight points each.
Houston used a 24-point second quarter to grab the victory. Seven different players scored during that eight-minute stretch, led by Barron’s six points. Nikiski outscored Houston 16-7 during the final frame, but the Hawks held on for the victory.
Houston also beat Dillingham and Kotzebue during the three-day, four-team round robin tourney. Barron led the Hawks with 15 points during a 40-37 win over Dillingham on Friday. Jace Taylor and Samuel Brandt added seven each.
Mitchell Ruta was also named all-tournament for the Hawks.
Ne Ne Hale also earned tournament MVP for the Hawks. Hale, a first-year Houston player, netted 18 points during a 52-48 loss to host Nikiski during the final day. Hale knocked down six shots, including a trio of three-pointers, against the Bulldogs. Seven of her 18 came in Houston’s 18-point fourth quarter.
Savannah Wells also had a strong game for the Hawks, finishing with 15 points. She scored eight first-quarter points. With Wells’ help, Houston led 15-10 after the first quarter.
Hale scored 25 during a 52-50 loss to Dillingham on Friday. Wells added nine points.
