BETHEL - The Houston boys basketball team won the Bethel Invitational tournament last weekend, extending its great start with three victories to open the season 6-0.
The Hawks won the championship behind the play of senior guard Jeff Huston, who was named the tournaments most valuable player. He was joined on the first-team, all-tournament team by Houstons Craig Ulrich and Jameson Fields.
Houston beat Bethel 56-42, Sand Point 62-46 and Unalakleet 81-53. The tournament was a round-robin format.
The Hawks werent tested in the tournament, as they rolled past all three teams with relative ease, as they have all season so far.
Against Bethel, Fields and Huston led the scoring attack, as both Hawks finished with 14 points.
Ulrich and Billy Cannon both chipped in with eight points as the Hawks downed the host Bethel Warriors.
Huston hit for 18 points against Sand Point, and he had plenty of help from Cannon, who had 17 points.
Fields added eight, and Travis Webb scored seven to lead a very balanced Houston attack.
The game was a showcase for the long-range shooters, as nine three-pointers fell in the game.
Houston overwhelmed Unalakleet 81-53 as two players both had 20 or more points. Cannon had 22 points including 12 in the fourth quarter and Fields added 20. Huston chipped in with 17 points.
The Houston girls team finished in second place following a 1-2 record. The Lady Hawks won the tiebreaker scenarios to finish second in the four-team round-robin tourney.
Houston fell 47-44 to West and 56-53 to Unalakleet but won its final contest 40-32 against Bethel.
We could have won all three games. Its a little disappointing from that standpoint, but we are well ahead of where I thought wed be at this point in the season, coach Norm Bouchard said. Im really happy with the way we are playing right now.
Freshman Linnea Pudwill led the Hawks against West with 15 points. Stephanie Smith had 13 and Vanessa Fridley had 10.
All three players were named to the all-tournament team, while Pudwill won the free-throw shooting tournament.
In the second round against Unalakleet, Smith poured in a game-high 17 points, while Pudwill and Fridley each had 10 for the Hawks.
The loss meant the Hawks would have to beat Bethel for second place, and they did just that.
Smith had 15 and Fridley added 10 against the Bethel Warriors.
