The Houston boys basketball team extended its undefeated season, and now the Hawks are conference champions.
The Hawks cut down the net after a 65-49 win over Mount Edgecumbe in the 3A Eastern Conference championship game March 11 at Mount Edegecumbe.
Cole Taylor hit a pair of three-pointers and led the Hawks with 16 points. Hunter Jefferson notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Houston opened the game on a 14-5 run and closed it on an 18-5 run.
The victory was Houston’s second over Mount Edgecumbe in the tourney. On the second day of the double-elimination event, Houston ran past Mount Edgecumbe 76-48.
Hayden Howard led five Hawks in double digits with a game-high 22 points. Taylor and Jefferson both had double-doubles. Taylor finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jefferson had 10 points and 11 boards. Braden Cork and Cody Wyrick scored 13 points each.
Houston opened the tourney with a 69-24 win over Sitka.
Cork hit seven threes and led Houston with 23 points. Howard was 5 of 6 from beyond the arc and added 22.
The Hawks earned one of the conference’s two automatic bids to the 3A state tournament,
The Redington girls also earned a trip to state with a runner-up finish in the Eastern Conference. Top-seeded Sitka edged the Huskies 36-32 in the final on March 11.
Redington slipped by rival Houston 38-35 earlier in the day. Lexi Seymore led Redington with a double-double, notching 19 points and 15 rebounds. Destiny Simmons scored 10 for the Huskies.
Grace Gillespie led Houston with 11 points.
Houston beat Mount Edgecumbe 53-45. Gillespie, Anna Whitted and Emily Bitler scored 12 points each.
