Houston boys win Seward Invitational

SEWARD — With less than a week until the region championship meet, the Houston boys team is showing the Hawks have the potential to be a top team in the upcoming Region III-3A meet, which is slated to start Friday at Nikiski High School.

This past week, Houston used 80 points in the team standings to win the Seward Invitational and finish ahead of region rivals, such as Anchorage Christian, Grace Christian and host Seward.

“We were hoping for some good times, getting ready for regions and state. But for us, it’s always nice to get a win when we can,” Houston head coach Pat Egelus said.

Heading into the meet, Egelus said he wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the 10-team invitational. He knew solid teams from Houston’s conference would be there, but wasn’t sure which teams would be at full strength. At that point, Egelus said the Hawks were focused on using the Seward Invite as a way to continue to prepare for regions.

“We were kind of fine-tuning at that point,” Egelus said. “We’re a small team. We kind of knew where the points were going to come from.”

By winning the Seward Invite, Egelus said he knows his boys team has the potential to be in the hunt for a top spot in the region meet, and that’s what he’s stressed to his athletes since.

“Looking at where everyone is sitting, I think we’re going to be in the chase,” Egelus said. “That’s a fun thing for these kids, something to build for.”

Seniors Charlie Buzby and Ben Bayne each won a pair of events, and also helped the Hawks win a pair of relay events.

Buzby used a time of 11.94 seconds to win the 100 meters, and finished first in the 200 with a time of 23.74. Buzby is currently ranked first in the 123A class in the 200 and second in the 100.

Bayne swept the hurdles events for the Hawks, finishing first in the 110 (17.82) and 300 hurdles (43.55).

Buzby, Bayne, Matt Barron and Dustin Griffith combined to win the 400 relay, with a mark of 47.94. The same group also won the 800 relay, with a time of 1:39.82.

Colony finished fifth in the boys’ standings with 52 points. Gatwech Both led Colony with a win in the triple jump. Both was also third in the long jump. Ken McCoy finished second in the 200 and third in the 300 for Colony.

Palmer finished sixth in the standings. James Nisbett finished second in the 100. Palmer was also second in the 400 relay.

Palmer senior Taylor Blake led Valley girls with a win in the shot put. Blake used a throw of 37 feet, 6.25 inches to finish first.
