Houston crowns 3 champs at Valdez tournament

VALDEZ — A trio of Houston Hawks earned individual titles during the Throwdown in the Snow Town last week in Valdez.

Luke Wagner, Ryan Radner and Aaron Drake each won their respective weight classes to help lead Houston to a third-place finish in the team standings.

Wagner, a two-time defending state champion, pinned his way to the 220-pound title and beat another defending state champion in the process. Wagner, who has won the last two 123A state crowns at 220 pounds, pinned Thomas Hoseth of Dillingham at the 4:36 mark. Hoseth won a small-schools title at heavyweight last season. Wagner needed only 27 seconds to pin Glennallen’s Jody Rhodes earlier in the tournament.

Radner, the No. 4 seed at 152 pounds, upset the top two seeds in the bracket to win his weight class. Radmer beat Adam Downing of Valdez, the No. 1 seed, 8-4 in the semifinals. Radmer pinned second-seeded Cole Schlagel of Dillingham in the championship round.

Drake, who finished third at 106 in the state tournament last year, pinned top-seeded Dakota Garner of Eielson in the championship round.

Three Hawks also advanced to the third-place matches. Etienne Kinney edged Dillingham’s Danny Miller 9-7 to take third.

Adam Hanohano (145) and Walker Stephens (220) each finished fourth for the Hawks.

The Hawks also competed in the Glennallen Bang Around on Oct. 17. Wagner pinned all four opponents he faced and won the 285-pound class.

Drake (113), Keith Paul (195), Nichole Radmer (98) and Ryan Radmer (152) each finished second in their respective weight class for the Hawks.
