Houston crowns champion at 171 pounds

FAIRBANKS — Aaron Reese led the Houston Hawks with an individual title during the Mid-Alaska Conference Championships wrestling tournament Saturday at Lathrop High School in Fairbanks.

Reese, the second seed in the 171-pound class, won the title after top-seeded Chris Nuttall of West Valley forfieted during the finals. Reese was one of three Hawks to advance to the final round. Garrett Elder and Luke Wagner each placed second.

Elder, the third seed at 160, upset second-seeded Trent Sheperksy of North Pole 13-11 in the semifinal round. Lathrop’s Brandon Wiese used a 15-4 major decision to beat Elder in the finals.

Wagner, the top seed at 215, was pinned by West Valley’s Lenord McMullen in the finals.

The top three wrestlers from each weight class advance to the ASAA/First National Bank 4A State Championships which starts Friday at the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center in Wasilla.
