Houston Fire Department earns Home Depot grant

Houston Fire Department was notified of a grant from The Home Depot Foundation toward the purchase of combination smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms. These alarms will be available for trained firefighters to install them at no cost in homes through Houston, Big Lake, and Meadow Lakes through a partnership between the City of Houston Fire Department and the West Lakes Fire Department.

Often on calls, firefighters discover that a home does not have smoke or CO alarms. While we educate people on the importance of having these alarms, many people are unable to purchase them, do not know that they have expiration dates, or forget to change the batteries in them. When this happens, this grant will allow firefighters to immediately install fresh alarms into the home so that the house is safer immediately without having to wait for the resident to make the next trip to their local store. Alarms will also be available as needed for individuals who request them as long as supplies last. The alarms will all have 10-year batteries in them that do not ever need to be changed.

Since the first The Home Depot store opened in 1979, giving back has been a core value for the Company and a passion for its associates. Today, The Home Depot, in partnership with The Home Depot Foundation, focuses its philanthropic efforts on improving the homes and lives of U.S. military veterans and their families and aiding communities affected by natural disasters. Through Team Depot, the Company’s associate-led volunteer force, thousands of associates dedicate their time and talents to these efforts in the communities where they live and work.

To date, The Home Depot Foundation has invested more than $350 million to support veterans in need — and improved more than 48,000 homes and facilities across more than 4,500 cities .
