NIKISKI —The Houston girls used a big second quarter to score a 51-25 win over Kotzebue during the first day of the Nikiski Tip-Off Thursday in Nikiski.
Kimberly Quincy scored six of her game-high 12 points during Houston's 20-point second quarter. The Hawks, who outscored Kotzebue 20-7 in the second quarter, led 32-14 at halftime.
Aspen Ruth also scored 12 points for Houston. Quincy notched a double-double in the win, also pulling down a game-best 12 rebounds. Ashley Apangalook added five points, eight rebounds and three steals.
The Houston boys found themselves in a big hole early, and suffered a 64-24 loss to Kotzebue in the tournament Thursday. Kotzebue led 26-4 after the first quarter. Kotzebue also had a 16-2 run in the third.
Ben Bitler led the Hawks with nine points and seven rebounds.
The Houston squads continue tournament play Friday against Dillingham. The girls play at 2:45 p.m. and the boys play at 4:15 p.m. The Hawks play host Nikiski on Saturday, facing the Bulldogs at 3 and 4:30 p.m.
