Houston High graduates 64

WASILLA — Excited Houston High School seniors, their proud parents and squirming siblings crowded into the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center in Wasilla Wednesday night for the school’s annual commencement ceremony.

Whooping and clapping on the running track above the arena floor, the 64 seniors waited impatiently for this change-of-life to begin.

Most notable tonight was feature speaker, soccer coach, science teacher and 2004 Houston High alumni Colton Conner who received mostly hugs instead of handshakes as he congratulated the new graduates along with other dignitaries after receiving their diplomas.

“You can’t always choose your circumstances, but you can always choose your attitude,” he told the class of 2011. “Your day-to-day attitude will determine your success.”

Principal Bill Johnson gave a brief welcome before introducing Houston senior Amber Acton who led the ceremony on behalf of her class. It was also her honor to lead the class in the changing of its tassels from right to left to mark the completion of the graduation ceremony.

Valedictorians Garrett Elder and Tyler Howlett gave brief speeches before senior Kassidy Kuhn led the presentation of flowers and other acknowledgments.

Houston High counselor Beth Smart led the awards presentation. A senior class slideshow prepared by Houston senior Kylie Boepple followed.

Principal Johnson returned to the podium for the presentation of the class and math teacher Curt Youngberg did a final roll call before the issuing of diplomas.

Representing the Mat-Su Borough School District on stage to officially accept the 2011 graduates of Houston High were Assistant Superintendent of Education Deena Paramo, Executive Director of Education Mike Vrvilo and School Board President Mike Dunleavy.
