Houston High School to break ground July 15

HOUSTON — Nearly two and a half years since the magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck southcentral Alaska and caused wreckage to structures all around the state, the Mat-Su Borough will break ground on a new Houston High School. The old Houston Middle School building that was condemned and demolished will be the new site of Houston High School.

The groundbreaking ceremony will take place on July 15 at 11 a.m. on Hawk Lane. The new building will feature specific areas for instruction of construction trades, welding, culinary, and other vocational education. There will be 11 general classrooms with four resource classrooms and three science labs, as well as three Career and Technical Education labs.

The Mat-Su Borough received funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in May after speculation over how to pay for the construction of the building, which will cost approximately $34 million.
