In an unprecedented move, the City of Houston Mayor Virgie Thompson and Deputy Mayor Lance Wilson submitted letters of resignation on Friday. The city’s treasurer, Sally Schug, has also submitted a letter of resignation.

The resignations come on the heels of the city council elections held on Oct. 4, in which voters overwhelming elected two new council members and re-elected a third council member into office. The campaign saw mudslinging and accusations of fake social media accounts, along with aggressive campaigning from the candidates who ultimately won.

The election results are to be certified on a special City Council meeting on Oct. 10, when the new council members are to be sworn in and a new Mayor and Deputy Mayor are to be selected by the city council.

Additionally, the council is set to appoint a new council member after a sudden resignation during the summer, which was too late to be added to the ballot.

The resignations are effective October 7, which calls into question how the Monday meeting will look and if there will be enough members for a quorum to carry out

The City Clerk, Rebecca Rein, could not be reached for comment, but this leaves the city without leadership until the new members can be sworn in, at which time a new mayor and deputy mayor will be selected.
