ANCHORAGE — The Houston Hawks placed a pair of grapplers in the championship finals and notched a top-5 finish in the team standings during the Lime Solar/Anchorage Christian School Wrestling Invitational in Anchorage on Saturday.
Defending state champion Aaron Drake won the 126-pound class to help lead the Hawks to a fifth-place finish. Houston finished four points shy of fourth-place Nikiski in the team standings.
Drake edged Dillingham's Kenneth Savo 7-6 in the finals. Drake pinned his first two opponents in the tournament, before scoring a 7-4 win over fourth-seeded Evan Bockman of Grace Christian 13-4 in the quarterfinals.
Drake is undefeated this season.
Sean Lang also advanced to the finals for Houston. Lang, unseeded at 195, upset second-seeded Drew Nanouk in the quarterfinals, notching a second-round pin. Lang also pinned Nikiski's John McCormick in the first round of the semifinals.
The Hawks placed five wrestlers in the top 6 of their respective weight classes. Jacob McAnulty was third at 113. Kendel Beasley and Ezra Lincecum finished fifth and sixth respectively at heavyweight.
