Houston, Wasilla seceding from the borough?

WASILLA — Rumors are flying about Houston and possibly Wasilla making an attempt at seceding from the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.

Bill Gamble, chief of the West Lakes Fire Department, said he spoke to Houston Mayor Roger Purcell at a meeting Thursday regarding consolidation of ambulance services in that part of the borough.

He said the conversation was contentious and ended with Purcell saying, “Tomorrow the city of Houston and the city of Wasilla are going to announce that we’re going to split from the borough.”

Reached for comment, Purcell would not speak on the record.

“There’s a press release coming out this afternoon and that’s all I can say,” he said.
