The Houston Hawks continued their fast start to the 2023 season with another lopsided win. A week after beating rival Redington big, the Hawks stormed to a 50-6 victory over Kodiak Friday night in Kodiak.
Houston quarterback Carter Seime connected with Keldin Nicoll connected for a pair of touchdown passes to lead the Hawks. Both came within the final five minutes of the first half. Nicoll caught a 29-yard touchdown pass with 4:49 remaining in the second quarter and a 14-yarder about three minutes later.
Noah Whitted scored touchdowns on both sides of the ball. Whitted rushed for a 4-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and returned an interception 50 yards for a score in the third.
The Houston defense held Kodiak to nine yards of total offense.
Two-time defending Division II state champion Lathrop used a big first half to score a 39-14 victory over Palmer Saturday at Machetanz Field.
The Malemutes (1-1) built a 26-0 lead in the first half.
The Moose outgained Lathrop in the loss. Palmer (1-1) finished with 315 total yards, just ahead of Lathrop’s 310.
Corbin Gerkin rushed for a game-high 115 yards on 16 carries. The sophomore rushed for a 19-yard touchdown run, Sophomore quarterback Nolan Garner completed 12 of 21 passes for 169 yards. Junior Logan Rolston hauled in a jump ball, a 7-yard score, late in the game.
Eagle River (2-0) edged Wasilla (1-1) 13-10 in Eagle River.
Defending Division III state champion Homer (2-0) beat Redington (0-2) 66-16 in Homer.
