Houston wins district NYO title

A pair of athlete used three individual wins to help the Houston Hawks score the team title during the Native Youth Olympics District Championships at Houston Jr./Sr. High School earlier this month.

Ethan Epina and McCrae Mills each won three different events for Houston. Epina placed first in the boys Alaskan high kick, one foot high kick and scissor jump. Mills was first in the girls toe kick, wrist carry and seal hop. Ashlynn McRoberts added a pair of wins for Houston finishing first in both the girls kneel jump and Alaskan high kick. Alayna McRoberts (girls one hand reach) and Kidero Fono (Eskimo stick pull) also won events.

Houston finished with 44 total points.

Wasilla was the runner-up in the team standings with 24 total points. Andrea Apthorp (girls two foot high kick), Bae Kaufman (girls Eskimo stick pull) and Brock Harris (boys one hand reach) won events for the Warriors.

Colony was third with 15 points. Tyler Kent (boys two foot high kick) and Kiley Hall (girls scissor broad jump) earned wins for the Knights.

Redington also had a pair of winners. Myles Campbell was first in the boys wrist carry and Mya Campbell was first in the girls one foot high kick.

Palmer’s Alex Anvil (boys kneel jump) and Susinta Valley’s Ethan Bettles (boys seal hop) also won events.

The meet included 85 total athletes in grades seventh through 12th from 10 different Mat-Su middle and high schools.

Su Valley earned the sportsmanship award.
