Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Hugh Matheson, 64, of Vero Beach, Fla., died April 16, 2002, at his residence following a brief illness.
Mr. Matheson was born Aug. 23, 1937, in Washington, D.C. He taught history at the high school in Wasilla. He had been an active member of the Rotary club of Vero Beach, and on the Cause Board of the American Cancer Society. He enjoyed collecting stamps and was a member of the Stamp Club of Vero Beach. Mr. Matheson was a member of the Matheson Clan and attended monthly meetings of the Scottish Club of the Treasure Coast. He also was an avid bird watcher and belonged to a group of birders in Vero Beach.
Mr. Matheson is survived by his three children, Hugh Matheson, Steven Matheson and Lynn Battleson; and their mother, Florence Matheson; three grandchildren, Justin Parkhurst, Steven Matheson and Grace Marie Bartleson; and two sisters, Frances Weichert and Eileen Matheson. He was the beloved companion of Peggy Harvey and her family.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Cox-Gifford Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 9:30 a.m., at Holy Cross Catholic church, Vero Beach.
Inurnment will take place at a later date in Sebastian Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1401 21st St., Vero Beach, Fl. 32960, in Mr. Matheson's memory.
