To the editor:
Shelley Hughes did not speak for the women of Alaska Sunday evening, April 13. She voted against funding of poor women’s abortions, saying she had once been poor, too. So was I once poor. But I understand what “no funds” means.
Two amendments to the bill, put forth by the Democrats, were both practical and aimed at cutting down on numbers of abortions. Specifically, they wanted an addendum included that would ensure low-income women get coverage for family planning and birth control through the Medicaid Woman’s Health Program.
In her silliness, and being totally ignorant of the facts when she is talking about the working-poor woman, she is insisting that women are so strong they don’t need government help. I, too, believe in the strength of women in our state. I would urge someone to run against her and encourage all women to support her opponent in the upcoming, November election.
