FAIRBANKS — A little more than a week after motoring off of Big Lake and 2,000 miles, the team of Chris Olds and Tyler Huntington won the Iron Dog snowmachine race Saturday.
The pair roared into downtown Fairbanks a little before noon. As winners, they earned a $50,000 cash prize, along with another $2,500 for being the first team to reach Nome earlier in the race.
Fighting through race conditions that at times saw slushy and bare trails, the win marks a strong beginning for Olds, who is an Iron Dog rookie this year. Teaming with the veteran Huntington made for a winning combination.
The team of Stephen Spence of Wasilla and Anchorage resident Doug Dixon crossed the finish line in second pace. The team of Bradley Helwig and Eric Quam rounded out the top three finishers.
Warmer than normal temperatures made conditions rough for many racers, with 11 of 29 teams that started the Iron Dog on Big Lake last Sunday finishing.
