WASILLA — The Redington Huskies may sit at 0-3 in the standings. But members of the first-year football program are embracing little victories.
After posting a mere 12 combined points during its first two weeks of action, the Huskies scored 30 during its 65-30 loss to Valdez Saturday at Redington Jr./Sr. High.
It was the third lopsided loss of the season for Redington, which made its varsity debut on Aug. 12. But it’s something to build on, Redington head coach Tony Brooke said.
“It’s a point of emphasis each time we make growth,” Brooke said. “We want to point that out.”
While it was a 35-point loss, and there’s work to be done with the Huskies defense, Brooke said the Redington coaches emphasized the positive.
“Saturday after the game, we said, we lost by 35, but hey we scored 30 points. We had over 300 yards of total offense, averaged 7 yards per carry,” Brooke said.
Kyler Rumfelt led the Huskies with 141 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. He scored from 9 and 35 yards out. Isaiah Hall added 97 yards on 14 carries, and chipped in a 7-yard touchdown run. The Huskies also scored through the air. Sam Reed finished 6 of 10 for 94 yards and two touchdowns. Brian Horne caught both touchdown passes, and finished with four catches for 67 yards.
“There’s still areas to improve, but Saturday was really good for us,” Brooke said.
Redington has had tough tests early. Its first three opponents have a combined 7-2 record heading into Week 4. But there may be opportunities for success during the second half of the season. The Huskies will be in Seward Saturday to face the Seahawks at 1 p.m. In Week 6, the Huskies host Voznesenka, which made its varsity debut in 2013.
“It’s going to be an interesting matchup, one we’re looking forward to,” Brooke said of his team’s game at Seward. “In the next couple of games I really think we match up better against the teams we are going to be playing.”
