I am a candidate for U.S. Senate

Greetings Sirs/Ma’ams, this is Huhnkie Lee, running for 2022 US Senate as an unaffiliated independent Alaskan.

I came to Alaska 6 years ago after I watched Alaskan TV shows like Yukon Men, Alaska the Last Frontier, as I was fascinated by the independent spirit of the state. I came to Alaska because I fell in love with its nature, its people, and its rich history.

In Alaska, about 55% are independents, 25% Republicans, 15% Democrats, and 5% other parties. Alaska is the only state in US where independents outnumber Republicans and Democrats combined. See https://ivn.us/2018/08/08/9-states-registered-independents-outnumber-major-political-parties . It is no coincidence that independents form majority in Alaska: people came to Alaska to get away from it all, to be free, perhaps as ideological refugees like myself.

For past 5 years, I was a registered Republican and I learned great deal from Alaskan Republicans, as they are wise, learned, kind people and I am eternally grateful their mentorship and friendship. But, after January 6, 2021, I had to leave Republican party, as I realized I can’t represent Republicans, as I no longer support President Trump politically. I didn’t want to be a RINO (Republican In Name Only), pretending to be someone I’m not.

When I came to Alaska in 2015, I didn’t know anyone, with no job lined-up. I was unemployed for three months, using my meager savings, eating ramen noodles and chicken thighs cooked in microwave. Then I got a computer programmer job. I worked as a programmer till 2018, when I passed Alaska Bar Exam and got a lawyer job.

I started attending local political meetings. The reason was I opposed Plastic Bag Ban in Wasilla, where I lived. In Wasilla City and Matsu Borough public meetings, I signed up for audience participation slots and expressed my opinion that plastic bags are not as harmful to environment as commonly known, and that the ban on plastic bags infringes on people’s freedom and may overburden local businesses.

What would I do if I become a US Senator next year? I would resurrect Pebble Mine. I don’t think it’s necessary to have a perfect environmental plan. Let the project go forward. If there’s problem, we can fix it later. We got filtration technologies, so we’ll prevent salmon death. I believe children of Alaska deserve professional jobs and mining is a very traditional Alaskan industry.

I submit US Senate Candidacy for your approval.

Huhnkie Lee,
