I am proud of my son and of hers

To the editor:

At a doctor’s appointment recently, the nurse who did the preliminary workup told me her son was in the military in Virginia. I expressed my happiness that he was safe on American soil and mentioned that my son is a Naval officer, mother-to-mother I thought.

She sneered, “Well they just sit in boats.”

I was nonplussed at the level of ignorance and lack of class represented by her words!

The contributions and sacrifices made by the U.S. Navy and all of our military services are invaluable and deserve our respect and gratitude. I am insulted by her words as an American, an Alaskan and a human being. I am proud of my son and of hers, and of those who will never walk this earth again.

Let us hope our service men and women are fighting wars, terrorism, natural disasters and insurgencies — and holding it firm in times of peace — on behalf of those who deserve it!
