I am The Life

This article is dedicated to the memory of my aunt, Janice Kendall, who went home to be with Jesus on October 21, 2022. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life” (John 14:6). She walked in His way, by the light of His truth, enjoyed an abundant life while on earth, and is now experiencing eternal life because Jesus’ words are true.

The Gospel of John describes Jesus as the source of life, “In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.” (John 1:4). John gives us bad news about how people responded to Jesus, “The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” (John 1:5). Why? “This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil” (John 3:19).

This is tragic because, “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him” (John 3:36).

Jesus pointed to His crucifixion as an expression of God’s love for us and the means by which we can experience eternal life, “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him” (John 3:14-17).

Paul in Romans explains our dilemma, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 6:23) but then he describes God’s solution, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). An incredible fact is that God did this for us when we did not know Him or even care to know him, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 5:10).

The solution to our problem of being separated from God (not being in relationship with Him) both in this life and for eternity has a simple solution, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31).

The message of salvation is the reason God gave us His Word, “these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:31).

“I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live” (Deuteronomy 30:19). Like my aunt, please walk in His way, live by His truth and take hold of eternal life.
