I cannot believe the state of Alaska is pushing the idea of damming the Susitna River again. I went to the Politics of Food event in Talkeetna over the weekend, and it reminded me of just how political our food choices can be. Everything we buy at the grocery store, every plate of food we make in our homes or order at a restaurant, and every bite we take is a vote for something. Well, I for one vote for wild salmon. Right now, our state is risking this irreplaceable resource for an outdated and incredibly expensive mega-dam project that we do not really need. It is not worth it. It was not worth it in the ’80s when we shot this project down in the first place, and it is not worth it today. As we continue to push toward the fall elections, this threat is at the forefront of my mind, and you can bet I will be voting for wild salmon and for NO Susitna dam.
