The Iditarod Trail Committee (ITC) announced on December 9 that Dan Carter has been appointed as Race Marshal for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
Carter has a decade of experience as a professional musher, competing in the Iditarod in 2007, and serving as a race judge and event official for the past four years, an experience he describes as “the ultimate backstage pass to the Iditarod” and one that he believes will be invaluable in his new leadership role, according to a press release from the ITC.
His background in sled dog sports includes guiding expeditions and competing in mid-distance, long-distance, and stage-format races across North America. He also brings fourteen years of experience directing and managing sled dog sporting events.
“I’ve always had a passion for this race,” said Carter. “Running the Iditarod in 2007 was a culmination of everything I had worked toward as a musher, and staying connected to this community has always been important to me. I’m honored to step into the role of Race Marshal and support the race in a new way.”
"We are thrilled to welcome Dan Carter as Race Marshal for the 2026 Iditarod. With years as a Race Judge, experience as a musher, and a deep passion for the sport, Dan is perfectly suited to uphold the integrity, safety, and high standards of the race," says Mark Nordman, Iditarod’s Race Director.
The Iditarod congratulates Dan Carter on his new role and looks forward to his leadership in the upcoming race.
The Ceremonial Start for the 2026 Iditarod is scheduled for March 7 in Anchorage. The Official Restart is set for March 8 in Willow.
