WASILLA — The Iditarod Trail Committee Board of Directors made some major changes during a meeting on June 8.

The biggest is an “expired dog” rule.

“Any dog death that occurs during the race results in immediate scratch or withdrawal, except only unless the death was caused solely by unforeseeable, external forces,” according to the 2019 Iditarod rule book adopted during the meeting.

The committee also added seats to its board of directors, according to a release issued by the Iditarod Trail Committee Saturday morning. There were nine, but the board will now have a dozen directors, each with a three-year term.
