Iditarod Elementary School hosted Disaster Preparedness Family Night for school families last Thursday. Federal, state and local agencies presented information to help families prepare for potential disasters residents face as part of life in Alaska.
Families rotated from station to station for presentations from the Federal Emergency Management Association, the American Red Cross, Mat-Su Borough Community Emergency Response Team and local volunteer firefighters for information on how to be prepared for crisis situations locally. The event was intended to raise awareness of the situations faced in the community and raise awareness of the flood victims in Minot, N.D.
In addition to the information presented on disaster preparedness, the families participated in a read-a-thon to benefit children affected by the massive flooding in Minot.
Money collected from the read-a-thon will be sent to schools impacted by this devastating flood. Donations will be accepted through Nov. 4.
Tari Jacobson, a fifth-grade teacher and former Minot resident said, “I have family members who lost their homes. I am very emotional about this project. Two schools were destroyed by the flood and over 1,000 students are attending school this year in churches and the city auditorium.”
