Iditarod Elementary School's playground will go KaBoom Thursday, as more than 150 volunteers are teaming up to build a playground in a single day.

The KaBoom program is run through The Home Depot, and volunteers from the local store will join with others to help make the playground project a reality.

From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, volunteers will put together new equipment that was purchased through the KaBoom program and the Iditarod Elementary School PTA.

Students helped design the new playground during "Design Day," which was held in mid-May.

Students were encouraged to use crayons and draw their visions of a new playground, and those ideas were then joined with ideas from the PTA to come up with the finished project. Every detail was covered, including what colors the playground equipment would be.

"I hope it's the best playground we've ever had," said third-grader Andrew Cooley on Design Day. "I know it will be because we are designing it."

The new playground will cover a 50-feet-by-50-feet area. The equipment was purchased through Playworld Systems, a national playground equipment manufacturer.

"It's like an old-fashioned barn-raising," Deifell said. "Everyone works together to make it happen."

Those interested in helping with the one-day construction project can come to Iditarod Elementary School and lend a hand.
