The Iditarod Trail Committee honored a half-dozen of the greatest of the Last Great Race during the Legends of Iditarod Gala Oct. 23 at the Alaska Aviation Museum in Anchorage.
A six pack of mushing super stars were inducted as part of the inaugural class into the Iditarod Musher Hall of Fame. The group included Rick Swenson, Libby Riddles, Susan Butcher, Martin Buser, Jeff King and Lance Mackey.
Swenson was the first five-time Iditarod champ, earning titles in 1977, 1979, 1981, 1982 and 1991. He competed in the Iditarod more than two-dozen times.
Riddles was the first woman to be crowned Iditarod champ, winning the race in 1985.
Butcher followed Riddles as the second woman to win the race in 1986, and had four titles. She also won in 1987, 1988 and 1990.
Buser, of Big Lake, is also a four-time champ, with wins in 1992, 1994, 1997 and 2002. He competed more than 30 times, and also received the humanitarian award five times.
King is another four-time winner, with titles in 1993, 1996, 1998 and 2006.
Mackey made history with four straight Iditarod titles from 2007-2010.
