WASILLA — The Iditarod recently announced the first two digital initiatives with the launch of their new online platform, the “IditaVerse.”

The first initiative is the IditaCoin, a crypto token available to dog lovers around the world.

Iditarod officials worked closely with a team of blockchain experts, architects, and best-in-class foundational technology for this project, according to a recent press release. The IditaCoin is intended to generate funding for staging the race as well as animal welfare grants and financial support for the rural communities along the trail.

The IditaCoin pre-launch will be offered at approximately half the price of the expected public listing as a chance to participate before a coin is publicly traded. All pre-sales will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Prior knowledge about cryptocurrency is not required to participate.

“While many charitable organizations focus on campaigns asking for crypto donations, at the Iditarod, we have been creating a new way to use cryptocurrency as a self-sustaining resource,” Iditarod CEO Rob Urbach stated in the press release. “Our mission is to create the most exciting, useful canine coin in the market, and we want to launch this exciting new venture by offering it first to Alaskans and the Iditarod Nation.”

The second initiative involved the launch of commemorative non-fungible tokens through the Iditarod5000 NFT collection. Those who purchase Iditarod5000 NFTs will own collectible digital objects created using blockchain technology to “mint” exclusive versions for purchase.

Iditarod5000 NFT revenue will also go toward overall operations such as dog welfare programs. The collection features 5,000 race dogs with Alaskan backdrops inspired by real Iditarod competitors. Each NFT bares the Iditarod’s 50th-anniversary logo. The collection went on sale Tuesday, March 15, coinciding with the first-place finisher of the 50th Iditarod.
