Veteran Iditarod musher Deke Naaktgeboren has announced his decision to withdraw from the 2026 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, stating it was “in the best interest of his team.”
According to a press release, Naaktgeboren came to the decision after thoughtful consideration and prioritizing the health and well-being of his dogs, determining that stepping back this year is the responsible choice.
“The Iditarod Trail Committee respects Deke’s commitment to his team and the care he consistently shows for his dogs. Decisions like this reflect the deep responsibility that comes with competing on the Iditarod Trail.”
Naaktgeboren is a three-time Iditarod finisher and has taken part in the Yukon Quest 300, 350 & 1000 mile races. He has also competed in many mid distance races,
“We wish Deke and his team the very best and look forward to seeing them back on the trail in the future.”
The 2026 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is set to begin with the Ceremonial Start in Anchorage on March 7, 2026, followed by the Official Restart in Willow on March 8, 2026.
