WASILLA — According to a press release issued by the Iditarod Trail Committee Saturday afternoon, race officials have proposed the possibility of moving the re-start of the 2014 Iditarod Sled Dog Race to Fairbanks.

Without saying a Willow re-start is in jeopardy, race officials have created an alternative route for the 2014 race.

“As of today, we are still planning on having acceptable trail starting in Willow and going over the Alaska Range to Nome,” the press release states. “We do have trail concerns from the top of Rainy Pass to Nikolai. Because of these concerns, a contingency plan will be used if the Alaska Range conditions are not acceptable.”

A final decision is expected to be made Feb. 17.

If the race re-start is moved to Fairbanks, the re-start would be Monday, March 3 rather than the traditional Sunday re-start in Willow.
