I couldn’t agree more with Dr. Valerius’s letter supporting statewide smoke-free policies. Most of us value our health and want to live well. That is one of the reasons I support a smoke-free work environment. Also, it makes economic sense during this time of rising health care costs, especially when four Alaska cities top the national list when it comes to the high cost of health care.
Many of the businesses and agencies that have already changed to a smoke-free policy attest to increased employee health benefits, cost savings and increased consumer satisfaction. It costs us all when we continue to ignore the impact of toxic secondhand fumes to our wellbeing. Given the evidence, and knowing it’s the right thing to do, I support the proposed legislation to free the workplace of secondhand smoke. It will contribute to the long-term health not only of those living here in the Valley but of all Alaskans.
