ANCHORAGE — Perseverance Theatre is closing its all-queer 2023-2024 season with "Indecent," a period piece set in the early 20th century that follows the true story of Sholem Asch's controversial play, "God of Vengeance" which faced censorship and strong opposition due to its lesbian protagonists.

"Indecent" runs from Feb. 16 to March 3 at the Perseverance Theatre in Juneau. There will also be a "Pay As You Can" preview event Feb. 14

The production will eventually make its way to the UAA Fine Arts Building in Anchorage for a run that spans from March 16 to March 24.

According to a recent press release, "Indecent" explores the persecution of artists and the undeniable impact of boundary-pushing work through ensemble storytelling and evocative live music.

"Indecent" is a Tony Award-winning play written by Perseverance Theatre collaborator and internationally-acclaimed playwright Paula Vogel.

It's being directed by Juneau resident Hannah Wolf and features music direction and accordion by David Romtvedt, with Beth Leibowitz on clarinet and Lisa Ibias on violin.

Chris Stahl is playing the role of Lemml, Jessica Faust is performing as Chana, and Ayla Rose Barreau is taking on the part of Halina.

Jack Scholz is playing the role of Avram, with Enrique Bravo as Mendel, and Roblin Davis as Otto.

University of Alaska Southeast Dean of Arts and Sciences Carin Silkaitis is making their Perseverance Theatre debut as Vera

The play will also feature choreography by Tatiana Pandiani, scenic design by Iman Corbani, lighting design by C. Archer Touchet, and costume design by Peggy McKowen.

“Our Perseverance Theatre Team works with great care to select our seasons— we listen deeply and work to support the conversations that our communities are working to bring forward for a just and equitable world. We welcome everyone to celebrate our communities and the incredible artistry and talent of Alaska as we produce this 2023-2024 Season," Artistic Director Leslie Ishii stated on the Perseverance Theatre website.
