Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Irene Mary Gicewicz Yaskolski died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, in her home in Wasilla. She and her husband Bill came to Alaska in 1948 to hunt and fish with Irene's brother Ted (stationed at Elmendorf AFB), and remained for good, both working at Elmendorf AFB.
A funeral service will be held at Sacred Heart Church in Wasilla at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2, preceded by a public visitation in the church chapel at 9 a.m. The funeral mass will be concelebrated by Archbishop Francis Hurley, Emeritus; by Archbishop Roger Schwietz; by Reverend Kaspar Mallavarapu, Pastor; and by Irene's brother, Reverend Edward Gicewicz, C.M.
A reception will follow the funeral in Sacred Heart Church; burial will occur at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Wasilla.
Mrs. Yaskolski was born on Oct. 2, 1915, in Worcester, Mass. She worked for a number of years as a packer foreman at Elmendorf AFB's shipping department.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, William Bernard Yaskolski; by her brother Colonel Thaddeus P.J. Gicewicz, USAF; and by her sister Mrs. Hedwig M. Higgins. She is survived by her brother Reverend Edward P. Gicewicz, C.M.; by her sister-in-law Margaret Mary Gicewicz; and by many nephews, grand-nephews, nieces and grand-nieces.
