It is a matter of public trust

To the editor:

It surprises me that a state representative refuses to pay back $65,000 she received for an easement she could not sell and never delivered. An easement is a grant of a right to cross one’s land in the future. When someone sells an easement across land held subject to a lease for agricultural rights only, the person selling the easement tries to sell a right they cannot sell.

In Rep. Lynn Gattis’ case, the Mat-Su Borough never received its easement. Republican Rep. Gattis, as reported in the Anchorage Daily News March 24, received $65,000 for something she could not sell. She should repay the borough its $65,000.

It is a matter of public trust.
